Research
Scientists and surgeons in the Department conduct research on fundamental biology as well as specific diseases, including forms of cancer, disorders of the blood vessels, diabetes and heart abnormalities. Other work is focused on understanding the role of the human microbiome, the population of bacteria that inhabits all of us, in illness and health.
In addition to laboratory-based research, University of Chicago surgeons conduct clinical studies to help develop new therapies. Opportunities to participate in these studies can be identified by following the Clinical Trials link on this website.
